Hicap starting upgrade kit
Please note, this is for the K1300GT models which have the positive terminal on the left hand side.
If you do require the type with the positive terminal on the right hand side, this is part number ELA91301.
- HICAP SCDC - High Capacity Sealed Current Distribution Circuit
- This new high technology treatment seals the copper surfaces against harsh environments and so the circuit is 100% sealed
- improves your starting to better than it was when your bike was new
- most bikes will start in about a second (assuming you have a decent battery and your starter isn't worn out)
- extends battery life (sometimes 2-3 times longer life)
- maximizes the life of your starter motor
- virtually eliminates the chance of the aggravating 'fused solenoid syndrome'
- minimizes your chance of being left stranded
- overall better electrical system performance
- enhances your pride of ownership in your classic motorcycle
- minimizes your impact on the environment
BMW also supply a "cure" to the hot starting issues with the K1300 models, see our part number ELA32735. It is interesting to compare this kit with the BMW item, please read below for more information:
In the BMW kit, a relay is included. The green relay in the BMW circuit takes the place of the solenoid found on most other motorcycles. It transmits 100% of the available battery
voltage directly to the starter motor with no intervening terminations. The relay has no advantages over the solenoids and just seems to have been a design choice. The K1200 even uses a different type. Based on our experience, the chance that a relay or a solenoid *has* to be changed out is very small. So, we would advise to install the this kit and only then if you still experience starting issues, spend the extra money for the relay. It is a simple plug into the relay holder and then the specialised terminals plug into the relay spades. The BMW kit is more expensive and we think the relay has large part in this extra price.
BMW do upgrade the wire to a slightly larger gauge than OEM, but they only do 2 out of 3 portions of the circuit. The OE ground lead stays in the circuit which in theory is a flaw. The ground lead returns all of the electrical energy back to the battery and because this kit upgrades that ground lead many bikes end up running better due to the CU and various sensors getting a better ground.
